Why do we celebrate Labor Day? πŸ₯³

Published over 2 years agoΒ β€’Β 23 min read

It's not as cute and fluffy as it sounds. Big bruvah industry and capitalism didn't wake up on the right side of the bed one Monday and exclaim...

"I'ma give all the laborers of North America a day off because that's the type of guy I am"

It was a day taken back by the workers.

According TedEd, Labor Day was "originally celebrated in New York City’s Union Square in 1882. It was organized by unions as a rare day of rest for the overworked during the Industrial Revolution."

Folks were typically working 12 hours a day, six days a week. No fringe benefits. No job security. And hideous working conditions. This very much included children. I can't even picture my lil Henri picking up his toys let alone operating heavy machinery.

Activists definitely weren't about that life, and many lost their lives in the fight.

Actually the first Labor Day was May 1st, the day four leaders of the movement were caught and hung in the Haymarket Riots in Chicago. And that's not great PR for America and Canada so they settle on a day halfway between July 4th and December 31st.

Now most of us fire up the grill, go sale diving, or hit the beach on a good Labor Day weekend.

But let us not forget all the people who still have to work today and the many child laborers that still are being exploited here in the US (because there are) and abroad.

And to the business owners who never take a day off, from vendors to caregivers, but especially sex workers and day laborers. Here's to hoping you get a chance to breathe.

Happy Work Your Ass Off... Off Day!
